TLDR

Zombarium is a top-down 2D tower defense game. Test the game out and if you like how it looks and think it could turn into something even better join the discord and discuss with me and other members and get updates on game development.

TLDR;

Zombarium is a top-down 2D tower defense game inspired by the online browser game "Zombs.io" and aims to replicate and expand upon what it had laid out. Zombs.io was a fantastic casual game that scratched an itch for a gameplay style I didn't know about, it doesn't require much thought or effort to play it but the experience is genuinely fun despite that, and makes it significantly easier to play, especially for players who get into "game ruts." Unfortunately, that game was more or less a project done by a group of people simply because they had wanted to try their hand at game development and understandably they ended development for the most part having the last update back in 2017 (Edit: Supposedly they have been performing updates consistently although they are limited to bug fixes/patches, nothing content-wise or major is added. Their discord is also locked down and nobody can post.). As a result, I want to build the idea of this game up again on my own with the prospects of expanding upon and maintaining it.

Some of the ideas I'd like to work on implementing are the following:

  • New resources
    • I'd like to integrate a more finite resource to help facilitate the need for world interaction outside of simply finding a place to plop down a base and occasionally attempting to find players to hunt. It would also allow for more interesting game mechanics that rely on a constantly consumed yet finite resource that needs to be scoured for.
  • Dungeons
    • An aspect of the game I overlooked myself until I had played with other people is the combat against the enemies, I personally have always just built my base and watched enemies die and at most I would attack enemies that got past anything. As a result, I think it'd be nice to implement systems to specifically expand upon that outside of defending your base, and possibly make it a method of earning some form of reward and adding passive challenges for people to attempt while their base defends itself.
  • World events
    • This is a fairly loosey-goosey idea, but it derives from the concept of world bosses seen in a few popular RPGMMOs that require group cooperation to be able to defeat, as the details and what these bosses would entail are still up for discussion.
  • Pets
    • I like the two pets Zombs.io had but it would've been nice if they were developed to be a bit more useful, an annoying bug was they didn't have any amount of pathfinding so they would easily get stuck and only eventually teleport once at a faraway distance. I'd also like to have cosmetic-only pets people can have that could maybe be earned or obtained some other way.
  • Specialization
    • I want to add more towers but I also think there should be a need to pick and choose some towers rather than having them available outright, in addition, I want to expand upon the party aspect and add class specializations that give players unique abilities to change the dynamic of having a group of people outside of simply having more members. With this idea, I think that towers would come along with whatever specializations a person chooses like a medic pathway granting a tower that does healing and a heavy weapons pathway that grants a tower with more artillery. This also expands the available options in terms of what the meta is for base designs as games like this always formulate a meta and with a limited set of tools available it gets pinpointed fairly fast.
  • Infinity
    • What also annoyed me about Zombs.io is the fact that the levels got capped off at level 8 and you finished the game at that point regardless of how many more waves come, there is no more reason to keep attention to the game at that point. So I'd like to implement a dynamic leveling and difficulty system that allows for an infinite range of levels (unless someone somehow reaches the integer limit.)
  • Singleplayer
    • Because of the infinity addition, I want it to be possible for people to genuinely push the limits of the game and get as far up as they can and I think a way to help with that is implementing a singleplayer feature that allows people to save and restore games so they can keep working on a design and see how far it gets. It will be restricted in terms of what is available in comparison to multiplayer-like dungeons for example. Also tossed around the idea of an idle version of the game that runs at a much slower pace so it's not as critical for you to be present 24/7.
